On December 18th, 2009, Dominica will have their General Election, 2009. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will be running for the Dominica Labour Party, with the aid of his leading advisor, Hartley Henry. During the 2005 election, Skerrit and the Dominica Labour Party won 12 seats. The United Workers Party won 8 seats and the Independent Labour party one 1 seat. The Dominica Freedom Party did not win any seats at that time.
Dominica, as a parliamentary democracy within the Commonweath of Nations, is one of the region’s few republics. The president in Dominica is the head of state, while executive powers go to the cabinet. The cabinet is headed by the prime minister. The unicameral parliament has a thirty-member House of Assembly which has 21 directly elected members and nine senators. The senators can either be appointed by the president or elected by the other members of the House of Assembly.
