Dominica Elections Soon

On December 18th, 2009, Dominica will have their General Election, 2009. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will be running for the Dominica Labour Party, with the aid of his leading advisor, Hartley Henry. During the 2005 election, Skerrit and the Dominica Labour Party won 12 seats. The United Workers Party won 8 seats and the Independent Labour party one 1 seat. The Dominica Freedom Party did not win any seats at that time.

Dominica, as a parliamentary democracy within the Commonweath of Nations, is one of the region’s few republics. The president in Dominica is the head of state, while executive powers go to the cabinet. The cabinet is headed by the prime minister. The unicameral parliament has a thirty-member House of Assembly which has 21 directly elected members and nine senators. The senators can either be appointed by the president or elected by the other members of the House of Assembly.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Hartley Henry, and many others, are working tirelessly towards a successful and fair election on December 18th.

Dominica Proud to Show Positive Growth in 2009

The Economist Intelligence Unit, a highly respected guide for international economists, has reported that only Dominica has shown positive growth in 2009, out of all of the Caribbean States. Dominica is lead by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of the Dominica Labour Party who is advised by political advisor Hartley Henry and others.

Although only 754 square kilometers in size, Dominica is a beautiful island nation in the Caribbean Sea. Unlike many other countries in the Caribbean, Dominica is one of the region’s few republics. The president of Dominica is the head of state, while the executive power falls on the cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister.

Dominica was quite isolated in its first 100 years after Columbus’ discovery of it in 1493. In 1763, France turned over possession of Dominica to the United Kingdom. It became a colony in 1805 and, in 1838, it became the first British Caribbean colony to have a legislature controlled by an African majority. In 1896, when the United Kingdom took governmental control again, the Dominica became a Crown colony. Then, in 1978 it became an independent nation.
